In 2024, the Qiang New Year festival was transferred to the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. On the first day of the tenth lunar month, the Qiang people take white stones as their covenant and mark the years with the sound of drums, singing out amid blue skies and white clouds. The mouth harp hums, the Qiang flute breathes its long notes; the Shibi priest strikes the drum, and the Zajiu wine is broached—this is the oldest annual dialogue between a people and heaven and earth, their ancestors, and time itself.
