After 20 years of planning and negotiation, Vietnam's high-speed rail construction has finally reached a major turning point. In response to Japan's 2007 proposal of a staggering $58.7 billion plan—equivalent to 76% of Vietnam’s GDP at the time—the Vietnamese National Assembly urgently halted the project, citing the unsustainable financial burden. By 2025, the Vietnamese government has secured an $8.3 billion deal with Chinese enterprises to construct the cross-border railway linking Vietnam and China. This "steel artery," with a speed of 160 km/h, will directly connect to Yunnan, China.
