This year, the Hungarian-Chinese Bilingual School is particularly celebratory. From the Spring Festival Ceremony and Awarding Ceremony of the “China Ambassador Scholarship” at the beginning of the year to China Day on campus, there are numerous activities related to the 10th anniversary of the Belt and Road Initiative. Wang Yue, the Chinese director of the Hungarian-Chinese Bilingual School, was full of emotions. Having been engaged in Chinese teaching in Hungary for 12 years, she has witnessed the great development of China-Hungary friendship and contributed her own strength to cultural exchanges between China and Hungary.

Start teaching in Budapest

Promoting Chinese language has always been Wang Yue’s dream. In 2009, after graduating from Capital Normal University with a major in Chinese Language and Literature, Beijing girl Wang Yue made an unusual decision to teach Chinese overseas.

Romantic poems of Petőfi, the melodious music of Liszt, the winding Danube River, and artistic buildings standing on its banks, those are Wang Yue’s vision for a beautiful Budapest. At that time, the Chinese Centre for Language Education and Cooperation held training for overseas Chinese teachers for non-English speakers and offered the opportunity to study Hungarian at Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest. Wang Yue, who was preparing to teach Chinese and just graduated, felt like it was a chance to enter a door leading to an unknown future. Her parents were also very supportive, and despite their reluctance, she went to Eötvös Loránd University to study Hungarian without hesitation. Unexpectedly, this stay was more than ten years.

The Hungarian-Chinese Bilingual School is located on the bank of the Danube River, with the flags of Hungary, China, and the European Union flying in front of it. Established in September 2004 by the governments of China and Hungary, the Hungarian-Chinese Bilingual School is the only publicly-funded full-time school in Central and Eastern Europe that uses both Chinese and the local language as mediums for teaching. It is under the Hungarian public education system. When the school was established, it had only 87 students and mainly enrolled local Chinese students. With the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, the 2010 Shanghai World Expo, and the 2013 Belt and Road Initiative, China has become increasingly influential in the world from political, economic, and cultural perspectives, and a “Chinese language fever” was sweeping through Hungary. Chinese has been incorporated into Hungary’s national education system, and teenagers can choose Chinese as their first foreign language to take the entrance examination at primary and secondary school levels. The enrollment scale of the Hungarian-Chinese Bilingual School has also gradually expanded. In the spring of 2011, Wang Yue started teaching Chinese at the Hungarian-Chinese Bilingual School as a volunteer Chinese teacher.

At that time, Hu Lingyue, who was in Grade One, became a student of Professor Wang Yue’s first Chinese class. The school was organizing a Chinese reading competition. The judges were deeply impressed by Hu Lingyue’s vivid performance. With the passage of time, Hu Lingyue has grown into a fair lady. Her dream is to become an excellent translator. Now she is moving towards her dream step by step. In May 2022, Hu Lingyue passed the Intermediate Chinese College Entrance Examination with a high score. In November of the same year, she obtained outstanding results in the Advanced Chinese College Entrance Examination. She also passed HSK Level 4 and HSKK Intermediate with distinction. In January this year, Hu Lingyue won the “Chinese Ambassador Scholarship” for the second time.

Wang Yue recalled, “Hu Lingyue’s notebook is always densely packed. Every time I go to class, her eyes follow me all the time and she writes everything down.” “I think the most important thing is that I will chat with my friends in China every day using the Chinese words you taught me,” Hu Lingyue wrote to Wang Yue when he graduated from primary school. At that moment, Wang Yue was deeply moved. She was not only happy for Hu Lingyue but also felt that the language she taught could help students understand and love China in depth, which made her feel very meaningful.

In 2019, Wang Yue had taken on the role of the Chinese director of the Hungarian-Chinese Bilingual School Confucius Classroom while teaching Chinese, responsible for coordinating and arranging Chinese language courses, organizing Chinese cultural events, and managing students. This year, several students she taught entered the secondary school department and started a new academic journey.

Song Zhixiao entered the secondary school department this year and began to learn Chinese in Wang Yuexue’s class. Song Zhixiao was very curious and liked to ask questions. Once, she pointed to a Hungarian sentence and asked Wang Yue how to translate it into Chinese. The sentence could be translated into “the golden middle road” literally. Later, they found a better way to translate it, “the golden mean”, after a few discussions. There were many examples of such teaching and learning. In the process of discussion, Song Zhixiao’s Chinese level had been continuously improved, and Wang Yue’s Hungarian was also improving.

On the eve of the Spring Festival in 2023, Hu Lingyue and Song Zhixiao wrote to President Xi Jinping and his wife Professor Peng Liyuan on behalf of all students. In the letter, the girls talked about their 12-year Chinese learning experience. After graduation, they will study in China and hope to contribute to the friendship between China and Hungary. In his reply, President Xi Jinping praised their efforts in learning Chinese and Chinese culture. He also hoped that more and more Hungarian teenagers would like to learn Chinese and have the opportunity to visit China and encouraged them to know more about today’s China and its history and culture and strive to be ambassadors for inheriting and developing China-Hungary friendship.

Deepening China-Hungary friendship

Hungary has a historical resonance with China. In 2013, President Xi Jinping proposed the Belt and Road Initiative, and Hungary became the first EU country to sign a cooperation agreement with China. Hungary was also the first country to establish a working mechanism with China on the Belt and Road Initiative. During her years of teaching Chinese abroad, Wang Yue has noticed an increasing interest in Chinese culture among Hungarians. In the local area, eating with chopsticks, making dumplings, drawing Chinese paintings, practicing kungfu, celebrating Spring Festival and playing Taiji are common.

Since April 2011, Wang Yue has been teaching Chinese in the Hungarian-Chinese Bilingual School. She has done a good job, won unanimous praise from parents, and forged a deep friendship with students, which epitomizes the profound friendship between China and Hungary.

After years of teaching, Wang Yue’s students have achieved great success. Every student, from hardworking Hu Lingyue to Mandarin-singing Wang Milin, from Ge Li who loves Chinese because of her older brother’s influence to Song Zhixiao who is a Chinese-drama enthusiast, holds a deep respect and admiration for Wang Yue. “It’s a noble cause for me,” Wang Yue said of the job. “The greatest reward is that I have nurtured many outstanding students, and I have learned a lot of useful information from them while teaching them. This has promoted my own growth.”

In 2017, China and Hungary jointly announced the establishment of a comprehensive strategic partnership, marking a new stage of accelerated development in the China-Hungary relationship. That same year, the Hungarian-Chinese Bilingual School, together with Wang Yue’s alma mater, Capital Normal University, and Capital Normal University High School, established the Hungarian-Chinese Bilingual School Confucius Classroom. Over the years, it has trained a large number of outstanding Chinese language talents in Hungary and gained a high reputation in the education field. In addition, the Hungarian-Chinese Bilingual School organizes a number of large cultural ceremonies every year. Through news coverage of local mainstream media, the people of Hungary can perceive China in an all-round and multi-dimensional way. Being a teacher is like being spring rain that nourishes the crops, spreading knowledge to every student.

In addition to teaching students, Wang Yue has also actively contacted the relevant departments of both countries to create opportunities for students of the Hungarian-Chinese Bilingual School to study in China and exchange views, such as coordinating and organizing summer camps in China and applying for international Chinese teacher scholarships. These efforts have also received strong support from the Center for Language Education and Cooperation, partner universities of Confucius Classroom in China, such as Capital Normal University, and various relevant departments in provinces and cities.

In the process of carrying out Chinese teaching, Wang Yue felt that local parents wanted their children to learn Chinese well. The efforts of students also inspired Wang Yue to do a good job in each teaching session and try her best to answer students' questions. Wang Yue is acutely aware of the significant responsibility of nurturing more exceptional talent in the field of Chinese language. “Today, the students here are immersed in the shining civilizations of both countries, and in the future, they will surely add more brilliance to this beautiful garden. We will never forget our original intentions, fulfill our duties with dedication, and cultivate the successors who can promote the prosperity of civilization and deepen the friendship between our two countries,” said Wang Yue.

The different civilizations of China and Hungary have created distinctive cultures, but the two countries share common values in peaceful development and win-win cooperation. At present, the Belt and Road Initiative proposed by China is promoting the implementation of more and more cooperation projects in Hungary. The shared development vision and mutual trust and support have enabled China and Hungary to further understand and cooperate based on the good relationship. The two peoples have been on good terms and are having increasingly close cultural exchanges. People of different races communicate in the same language, and behind the Chinese words are their hearts, which have similar wishes. With people sharing the same wish, the flower of friendship is in full bloom along the Danube River.
