"They may be coppery." said Chen Qiang, heir to the Mianzhu New Year Paintings, when he enthusiastically speculated about the possible original colours of Sanxingdui's cultural relics, how they would've looked 3,000 years ago.

Chen Qiang is a city-level heir to the Mianzhu New Year Paintings in Deyang City, and runs the Xinxi New Year Painting Studio. In 2006, Mianzhu Woodblock New Year Paintings were included in the first batch of national intangible cultural heritage items for state protection. "I have been studying how to create Mianzhu New Year Paintings from my grandfather and father since a very young age, and I have granted the title of ninth-generation heir in my family." said Chen Qiang.

"Although the existing Sanxingdui cultural relics' colours have long-since been oxidized away, I can still feel that in all likelihood, ancient artisans used to paint these cultural relics with a variety of minerals." Talking about Sanxingdui cultural relics' original colours in ancient times, Chen Qiang inferred the colouring processes that the ancients used on Sanxingdui cultural relics from the traditional production processes of Mianzhu New Year Paintings; "In the past, the creation of Mianzhu New Year Paintings was also related to fine copper. Some works created with red copper and brass were forged and cooled to show more vibrant colours." He added: "It is very likely that the ancients deployed some similar techniques to make copper exhibit different colours, which is difficult to match with the modern colours we have at our disposal. The ancients may have used ancient processes such as forging, hardening with fire, and cooling to produce the final colours."

When Chen Qiang learned about Sanxingdui for the first time, he was touched by its magical appearance, and he often associates the unearthed Sanxingdui cultural relics with Mianzhu New Year Paintings. He told us: "There is an image of a money tree among Mianzhu New Year Paintings' characteristic elements, which is very similar to the Bronze Sacred Tree of Sanxingdui." Chen Qiang has even been putting this connection he imagines into practice for quite a while now: "Starting two years ago, I've taken Sanxingdui's elements, colours, and linework as references in the creation of Mianzhu New Year Paintings to produce cultural and creative works."

For this 'Colourful Sanxingdui' re-creation project, Chen Qiang chose the Bronze Mask as the object he wished to re-create, and hoped that such collaboration could allow Sanxingdui cultural relics and Mianzhu New Year Paintings to come closer into ordinary people's lives, as well as be better-known to people outside of the context of museums.
